Frequently Asked Questions
About Chip Cards
1. What is a chip-enabled card?
Chip cards, also known as “EMV” or “smart” cards, contain an embedded microchip which stores the same information as the magnetic stripe on the back of the card but is encrypted to provide enhanced security and protection against fraud.
2. What is EMV?
EMV – which stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa – is a global standard for cards equipped with computer chips and the technology used to authenticate chip-card transactions. In the wake of numerous large-scale data breaches and increasing rates of counterfeit card fraud, card issuers are migrating to this new technology to protect consumers and reduce the costs of fraud.
3. What to call the new card?
The chip cards are identified with different names; however all are same. Following are some common terms used for chip cards:
- Smart card
- Chip card
- Smart-chip card
- Chip-enabled smart card
- Chip-and-choice card (PIN or signature)
- EMV smart card
- EMV card
4. What will be the difference between my old credit card and my new credit card?
Your current/old Allied Visa Credit Card is using magnetic stripe technology while your new chip-enabled contactless Allied Visa Credit Card is equipped with chip and contactless technologies. However, your new card would also be used as magnetic stripe card where chip and contactless terminal support is not available at merchant outlets.
5. How would my new chip-enabled contactless Allied Visa Credit Card look like?
Your new chip-enabled contactless Allied Visa Credit Card will look like this:
Allied Visa Gold Credit Card
Allied Visa Platinum Credit Card
About Contactless Cards
6. What is the contactless in chip-enabled contactless Allied Visa Credit Card?
Contactless cards use radio-frequency identification (RFID) or near field communication (NFC) for making secure payments. These cards require only close proximity to NFC enabled POS machine to complete a transaction. A chip-enabled contactless credit card can be used without even removing it from wallet.
7. How will I use my contactless Allied Visa Credit Card?
- To pay using your contactless feature, first look for the contactless symbol at participating merchants on a contactless enabled terminal.
- Then tap your Card against the symbol on the terminal until the lights turn green.
- You may be asked to enter your PIN to validate that you are the genuine cardholder.
- Enter your PIN, if asked by the merchant, to complete the transaction cycle.
- A beep indicates successful payment.
8. How secure is contactless payment?
Very secure indeed, and certainly much more secure than carrying cash. Visa contactless cards use secure chip technology so you can feel totally confident when you’re using it to pay.
9. How Visa contactless cards are protected from the threat of fraud?
Every Visa contactless card contains a highly sophisticated, highly secure chip. This chip performs a wide range of functions to maintain the card’s security, and is able to interact securely with a contactless terminal.
For a transaction to take place, a Visa contactless card must interact with a Visa contactless acceptance terminal. To do this, it uses private or secret keys to generate one-time-only electronic signatures and cryptograms. That makes it just as secure as a normal chip transaction.
10. What if I walk by or brush against a contactless terminal? Could I accidently pay for someone else’s shopping?
No. First of all, the card needs to be very close to the terminal (always less than ten centimeters and usually less than two centimeters) – so generally a touch of the card above the terminal is required to make the payment.
Also, in a typical transaction, the sales assistant has to enter the amount for you to approve first, and then your card has to be held within a couple of centimeters of the terminal for longer than half a second.
11. If I have two contactless cards, could both of them be read simultaneously?
No. The Visa contactless technology has ‘anti-collision’ features; this means that if two cards are held to a terminal only one payment will be processed.
If the contactless reader detects more than one card, you may be asked to select the one you want to use. Or, in some cases, the entire payment may be cancelled.
If you do have more than one contactless card, it’s always best to present the one you want to pay with to the terminal – and leave the other in your purse or wallet.
