One of Pakistan's largest commercial banks, since 1942.

Allied Bank Limited (ABL) is a Pakistani commercial bank headquartered at 3 Tipu Block, Main Boulevard, New Garden Town, Lahore, and a subsidiary of the Ibrahim Group. Founded on 3 December 1942 by Khawaja Bashir Bux as Australasia Bank with initial capital of Rs 120,000, ABL is one of Pakistan’s oldest commercial banks. As of 2025, ABL is the 7th largest bank in Pakistan by market capitalisation and serves approximately 7 percent of all Pakistani bank deposits [1]. The bank is listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (ticker: ABL, KSE 100 component), regulated by the State Bank of Pakistan, and operates more than 1,500 branches nationwide along with an ATM network of 1,701 machines (1,456 on-site, 245 off-site). Its asset management arm is ABL Funds, its foreign-exchange subsidiary is ABL Exchange (Private) Limited, and its Islamic banking division is Allied Islamic Aitebar Banking.

Allied Bank has been part of Pakistan’s banking landscape since before the country was created. In 1942 the bank started as Australasia Bank in pre-Partition Lahore, founded by Khawaja Bashir Bux, who was born in 1911 to a Kashmir-origin silk-trading family that had relocated through Bombay and Perth before settling in Lahore. The bank was one of the first commercial banks established by Muslim entrepreneurs in the subcontinent. After Partition in 1947, it continued to operate in the newly created Pakistan. In 1974, under Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s nationalisation policy, Australasia Bank was merged with Sarhad Bank, Lahore Commercial Bank and Pakistan Bank and renamed Allied Bank of Pakistan, becoming one of the five nationalised commercial banks. In 1991 it became the first Pakistani bank to be privatised, through an employee buy-out. The Ibrahim Group acquired control in 2004, and the bank was renamed Allied Bank Limited in 2005.

Today, Allied Bank is a full-service commercial bank with a strong presence in retail, SME, corporate, Islamic and digital banking. In 2024 it reported revenue of Rs 404.74 billion (US$1.4 billion), total assets of Rs 2.81 trillion (US$10 billion), and serves customers with a workforce of 13,066 employees [2]. The myABL digital banking platform supports over 2.5 million active users. Allied Islamic Aitebar Banking operates as an independent group inside the same legal entity with its own Shariah Supervisory Board. Roshan Digital Services, launched in 2020 with the State Bank of Pakistan, positions ABL as a leading Pakistani bank for the overseas diaspora and is available in 175+ countries. In 2024-25, the bank was named “Pakistan’s Best Digital Bank for Large Corporations” by Euromoney and won six categories at the FinanceAsia Country Awards [3].
