The Board is assisted by the Shariah Compliance Department, which primarily discharges its duties in line with the Shariah Board guidelines, applicable AAOIFI Shariah Standards, Shariah Governance Framework of SBP, Industry best practices and the Bank’s internal policies and procedures. Additionally, the Shariah audit function also strengthens the Shariah compliance environment of the Bank by performing periodical audits of different organs of the Bank.

What Is a Shariah Board

A Shariah Board (SB) is a Group of Shariah Scholars (Muftian) appointed by the BoD as per fit and proper criteria issued by SBP. Their job is to ensure that every product and service is in conformity with the principles of Shariah.

In Pakistan, the State Bank of Pakistan requires every dedicated Islamic bank and Islamic Banking Window operation to have their Shariah Board. Allied Aitebar operates under this same regulatory requirement.

The Board gain their authority from the SBP’s Shariah Governance Framework. This framework sets out how Islamic Banking Institutions keep their oversight on the operation of Islamic Banking. It also defines how the Board’s decisions (Fatwa) must be implemented.

Mr Nayyar Mahmood, as Manager Shariah Compliance and other team members of Shariah Compliance support SCD functions. Both are based at Allied Bank’s Head Office in New Garden Town, Lahore.

The Role of Shariah Audit in Islamic Banking

Shariah Audit works independently and directly reports to the Chief Audit & Risk Review Group (A&RRG). The reports of Shariah audit are presented to the Shariah Board for their review and determining appropriate corrective actions.

The Board reviews whether the Bank’s products & Services, systems and transactions adhere to Shariah principles. This audit also checks compliance with State Bank of Pakistan rules. It follows Shariah Standards set by the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI).

Shariah Audit uses a risk-based approach to review the bank’s operations. It examines product development, financing activities, investment operations and treasury functions. It also checks charity arrangements, sometimes called purification, and technology systems.
This process confirms that the Board’s Fatwas are properly compliant.

Why This Oversight Matters for Customers

This layered system gives Allied Aitebar customers real assurance. Every deposit, financing and treasury & investment product passes through the Shariah Board for their review and approval. The Shariah Compliance Department then ensure these rulings are applied across daily operations while Shariah Audit checks independently that the rules are actually being followed.

Customers exploring Allied Aitebar products can also compare how Islamic banking differs from conventional banking.

This assurance applies across every Allied Aitebar product, from a simple deposit product to a complex corporate financing.
